Maan, why can't I live in England? Is anyone going?

On a completely different note, I am working on a short story for a contest here on DA. You don't exactly win anything, but your work does get featured.

Details can be found here. Here's to hoping everyone!

A brief excerpt from my short story:

As a rule people didn't acknowledge the fact that magic even existed. But of course everyone knew about the black market dealings and the subterranean cults and the fact that wizards had to walk to work, because if they used any technology at all it completely shuts down, ka-put, just like that.  Magic's just funny like that, they think, their eyes snagging, slowly dragging to a stop on that one particular person in a crowded sea of people. It's always painfully obvious who has magic, and it's not like they have a giant neon sign flashing HERE BE A WIZARD above their heads.  It's just obvious, the way it's obvious that the sky is blue and that there were whole entire sections of the city that are just Dead Zoned, because the more backwards a person lives the more magic they are.

But of course magic doesn't exist at all, does it?

As a rule people didn't acknowledge the fact that while yes, you could buy magic, if you were rich enough or desperate enough, there were also people who simply were magic without trying at all. They were just simply born to it, and it might lie dormant for years until emergence. You just
never knew. Anyone could be a wizard at any time, and even worse is that the later in life that the magic decided to show up the stronger it would be. Everyone knew the story of poor Jenkins Conroy, who at the age of ninety-nine suddenly became magic. They'd lost two whole city blocks simply because he'd tried to use the telephone.

But of course wizards didn't exist, so there never really was any Jenkins Conroy.

But that was a lie.

Because magic was very real indeed, and it wasn't very nice at all.

Scrawled this out late last night. LATE last night. After midnight last night. So excuse any rough inconsistencies and jerky clockwork; it'll be up and running smoothly by February 24th, I swear! But thoughts, anyone. I am eager for them the way the Mad Hatter is eager for TEA.

Yeah the Official Convention is a ripoff, go to Gally instead ( [link] ) I'm grumbling just as much, if not more, that Gally's all the way in America.

The story is a bit River's Of London and a bit Prosperity Island ( [link] )
